With the discovery of Mail Glitch on English versions of Ruby/Sapphire, there is now an English Any% category (separate from glitchless). Q: What is Mail Glitch? - An oversight with using Thief on a Mail holder in battle results in glitchy behavior, including tile corruption and item duplication. Q: Why do you use Treecko? - After Roxanne, we get access to the Mail Glitch and can use tile corruption to catch a level 35 Tentacool. This means our starter choice mostly comes down to who can beat Roxanne the fastest. Using RNG manipulation with Bullet Seed in battle, we can guarantee a win on Roxanne without fighting any optional trainers, which Mudkip cannot do. This makes Treecko very fast for the Roxanne split. Q: What are the new route changes? - The World Record route caught a Zigzagoon before Roxanne and incorporated a difficult Rare Candy Pickup manip into the Roxanne battle. It then duplicated that Rare Candy to get to a high level before Wattson. The new route will skip Zigzagoon and the Pickup manip entirely. However, the duplication glitch requires 5 Pokemon (with the current setup), so we will delay duplication until we get Castform. The two routes are very similar in terms of time on average, but the new route has a much easier earlygame by skipping the candy manip. The new route is a bit of a double-edged sword, as there is a greater opportunity for timesave with good RNG but also greater opportunity for timeloss with bad RNG. Because Zigzagoon was required in the old route, there was quite a bit of inconsistency involved. If you didn't find one in the wild, you have to chain Wingull into Zigzagoon. Without the need for Zigzagoon, we don't need to do Wingull manip before Roxanne either. This allows us to chain Tentacool into Wingull, skipping the save+quit for Wingull. Overall, I prefer this new route because it's easier to get a run going past Roxanne.
