I have ran at least one Pokemon game of each generation at some point in time, so I thought it would be fun to give my personal tier list of Pokemon generations for speedrunning (glitchless)! These are obviously just my own opinions, so don't take it personally if your favorite PSR game is lower for me than it would be for you. I'll also describe my reasoning for each of them. S TIER: Gen 1, Gen 3, Gen 4 - Gen 1: Gen 1 will always be one of the best gens to run for me for many reasons. The runs are relatively short, which is very convenient to play and combine with real life responsibilities. The games don't have dreading cut scenes, and the gameplay and menus feel very smooth. The competition is incredibly high, which motivates you a lot to get better. There's so much known about execution tricks in gen 1, and it feels like you're never finished learning all of them. At literally any point in the game there is stuff you can work on to improve, which feels very rewarding. Once you pick up on new techniques, you see very quick improvements in your time, which makes gen 1 a great learning school for how much execution matters. Other than that, there's obviously also a lot of strategical elements to gen 1 with for example the effect that red bar has in this game. I would also like to point out that gen 1 games are very easy to finish when you know what you're doing and not going for top times yet. The negative aspect of gen 1 when it comes to finishing runs only shows up when you actually go for top times, which is purely a result of how fierce the competition is. Before the point is reached that you're grinding for top times, the negative reputation that gen 1 has is in my opinion very unjustified. - Gen 3: Gen 3 gameplay feels incredibly smooth as well. There isn't much lag, the game responds quickly to your inputs, and menus feel very crispy. My main reason to put Gen 3 in S tier is the movement in these games (especially RSE). It's almost like it's made for speedrunning. Movement is extremely hard to master in this gen, but when you do, you can see great improvements to your skill and results. The way spinners are manipable in these games is also great for speedruning: 100% consistent and the faster you want to pass them you'll have to practice the harder tricks for that. There are some manips in these games that are a bit ridiculous though (like Kyogre catch manip). - Gen 4: With the way that overworld RNG works in this gen, gen 4 has amazing possibilities to extend manipulation to achieve very useful things for speedrunning. With this possibility there is also a lot of skill required to pull it of. It feels extremely rewarding when you do so, and this will translate into good results very quick. Most spinners in gen 4 you can pass with 100% certainty, but mostly with a relatively slow method. This forces you to decide between consistency and speed in some cases, which i think is a nice element. The battles in gen 4 are quite challenging, which require you to think and adapt a lot (for example Diamond/Pearl late game HP management). All of this together makes me believe that gen 4 is among the best gens to run. -- TO BE CONTINUED --
