Q: What are you doing? A: I am testing a recently proposed method for manipulating Entei's location after the Burned Tower cutscene in a Pokemon Crystal speedrun. Q: Why manipulate Entei? A: Entei is the fastest Pokemon to beat the game with, but only if caught immediately. Without manip, you have about a 22% chance of encountering it immediately. With the proposed manip, the chance would likely increase to 75% or higher. Q: What is the method? A: In theory, Entei's location should always be the same if you frame perfectly load your save file from a hard reset. This requires only one frame-perfect input, as the rest can be buffered. However, if you aim for a cluster of frames with a desirable location, you don't need to be frame perfect, and thus consistency is born. So the goal is to save in the Route 38 gatehouse, where the RNG is likely more consistent than in the overworld, then hit a cluster of frames that spawn Entei on Route 39. Exiting the gatehouse moves Entei to a random adjacent route, and Route 38 is the only route that's adjacent to Route 39, so he'll always be there (save a <5% chance of a jump to a completely random route). Q: How are you testing the method? A: https://pastebin.com/J3sBsZ5a Q: Who came up with this method? A: luckytyphlosion. Q: How are you catching Entei? A: By manipulating the Master Ball from the Goldenrod Lottery. Details here: http://forums.pokemonspeedruns.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=659 Q: Can you manip Entei's stats? A: Not at the moment. Stats aren't set until the encounter itself, and the RNG behaves strangely in the overworld. Q: Why not manip Raikou? A: Worse Attack, worse movepool (only Special move until L61 is Spark), and awful Jasmine fight. Even if you could manip the perfect Hidden Power, Raikou would be slower than Entei.
