Pokémon Crystal Any% Glitchless FAQ Rules: * Timing is by the in-game timer, as it shows either on the trainer card or on the save screen after beating Red and going through the second set of credits. * Runs must be done in single-segment as otherwise the in-game timer is inaccurate; resetting after entering the Hall of Fame is permitted. * Runs must be done on the English version. * Using glitches are not allowed. * Using a Poké Doll on the shiny Gyarados is allowed. * All variants of VBA are banned from all GB/GBC games. Approved emulators are Gambatte and BGB. * If using emulator, using save states is not allowed. Q: What are you trying to accomplish? A: I am trying to defeat Pkmn Trainer Red as fast as possible. A: Crystal has less required trainers, more spinners, and has a completely different route in many parts of the game. Q: Why do you choose the girl for the run? A: Most Gen 2 runners choose the girl as a way to distinguish the run from Gold. A: By setting the time so close to the night cycle, I can potentially catch a Sentret as a Cut slave. The night cycle is for a chance at catching a Poliwag early. Q: Why do you name everything "A"? A: Naming commonly seen names one character saves frames throughout the entirety of the run. A is just the fastest character to select. Q: Which starter Pokémon do you select? A: I select Totodile. Totodile's Rage is very game-breaking in the beginning, and he learns the biggest variety of TMs to sweep the game. Q: Why do you keep resetting the game? A: Speedruns are very optimized. Starting off with proper stats is the difference between a successful and a failed run. Q: What are the stats you want for Totodile? A: Totodile needs to have a minimum of 12 Attack and 11 Special Defense. 10 speed is preferred but I'll run 9 Speed. Q: You keep saying "DV" -- what is that? A: DV stands for determinant value. Each Pokemon has a DV ranging from 0 to 15 for each stat. The higher the DV, the higher the growth rate for that stat. At Level 100, the difference between 0 and 15 DV is about 30 stat points. DVs help me decide which strategies to use, and I can determine them by checking my stats at certain level-ups. Q: Why did you reset if you didn't even see the stats yet? A: If Totodile is female, it will always have 11 Attack. Q: Why do you catch [insert Pokémon here]? A: Here is a basic rundown of the entire team: > Totodile/Croconaw/Feraligatr - Main Pokémon. > Sentret/Bellsprout/Oddish - Cut slave. > Poliwag/Psyduck/Poliwhirl - Whirlpool and Waterfall slave. > Kenya (Spearow) - Fly slave. Q: What is a "spinner"? A: A spinner is a trainer that randomly looks in each direction. These spinning trainers cost precious time on account of extra time battling. There are a total of 17 unique spinners that I must pass 32 tiles worth of vision. Q: What are the hardest fights in this run? A: Rival 2 is easily the hardest fight. Bayleef has Razor Leaf, which has a 1 in 4 chance to critical hit; a critical hit most likely ends the run. Whitney can also end runs with an unpredictable Clefairy and a tough Miltank. Rival 3 can cause major problems with Curse and paralysis. Red fight is the last real troublemaker; it requires 4 turns of setup against a Pikachu with Thunder. Q: Why do you sit through the credits after the Elite Four? A: The in-game timer stops before the credits, so I use that opportunity to take a bathroom/mental break.
