HG/SS All In Game Trades FAQ (Manipless) Q: What is this run? A: This run is to complete all 10 In Game Trades in HG/SS. No Glitches are allowed in this category. Q: Why are you doing this run? A: Mostly because it's one of the 10 bounties that Sakharu put up in the DS Speedrunning Discord recently. This is a manipless run (I might do the manipped version later since both have a bounty, the route is quite different since it'd use Raikou) More information about those bounties here: https://pastebin.com/UR1pC7Hj Q: Do you plan on doing any of the other bounties? A: Yes, but given the timeline ends on July 1st, I won't get a chance to do all of them. But I'd like to try a couple. - Q: What are the 10 in game trades? Where do you do them? Anything you need to trigger them? A: They are as follows: 1) Bellsprout for Onix (Rocky) | Violet City 2) Drowzee for Machop (Muscle) | Goldenrod Dept Store 3) Krabby for Voltorb (Billy) | Olivine City 4) Anything for Steelix (Rusty) | Olivine City | Requires Jasmine's Phone Number (Obtained at the Olivine Cafe from 1pm - 2pm) 5) Female Dragonair for Dodrio (Doris) | Blackthorn City 6) Dugtrio for Magneton (Maggie) | Kanto Power Plant 7) Bonsly for Rhyhorn (Hornlette) | Diglett's Cave, 5pm-8pm | Requires Brock's Phone Number (Obtained at Diglett's Cave from 12pm - 3pm) 8) Forretress for Beldum (Iron) | Saffron City, Silph Co | Requires triggering Steven at Vermillion by obtaining the Lost Item (only doable after fixing the Power Plant and talking to the Copycat in Saffron), then again at Silph Co and receiving a Hoenn Starter (only doable after defeating Red), then again in Pewter Museum. 9) Pikachu for Pikachu (Volty) | Saffron City, Train Station | Requires Surge's Phone Number (Obtained at Kanto Power Plant, after capturing Zapdos (which requires beating Blue), from 9am - 11am) 10) Haunter for Xatu (Paul) | Pewter City Q: Why Soul Silver for this run? Isn't Heart Gold normally used for Manipless? A: Yes, Heart Gold is normally used for Manipless, as Bell Tower is seen as slightly better to do than Whirl Islands (easier to run from Ho-Oh, and an easier Max Revive in Bell Tower) However in this run, you ideally catch a Krabby in Whirl Islands on the way to Lugia (you could fish for one in Olivine, but it's slower to do so). Additionally, the extra reasonably obtainable Rare Candy in Whirl Islands is also more beneficial, as there are a few extra Pokemon that need some Rare Candies (e.g. Pineco to evolve, and potentially Dratini -> Dragonair too) Q: What's the current record? A: https://www.speedrun.com/pkmnhgssext?h=all-in-game-trades-manipless&x=xd1p6n4d-rn1ypx1n.10vx472l - Q: So what is the route for this run? A: It's quite similar to a manipless run of the game, with a few other things added on. That means the generaly Pokemon route is Cyndaquil -> Quilava until Goldenrod Get Kenya, use Kenya to beat Morty Catch L50 Magikarp above Mahogany, use Gyarados as main for the rest of the game. The things that are added, are about preparing for the In Game trades. So obviously, I have to obtain the Pokemon required for those trades. That means I have to: Catch a Bellsprout (Ideally on Route 31 before Violet, but it's only 20% here. If I don't get it there, I'll get it in Kanto on Route 24 where it's 35% to appear) Catch a Drowzee (50% on Route 34, caught after exiting Ilex Forest, so it's in my party when I'm shopping during the Radio Tower segment) Catch a Krabby (50% in Whirl Islands, done on the way to Lugia) Catch a Female Dratini/Dragonair (Done after beating Blue, as I need the Super Rod from Kanto to fish one out) Catch a Dugtrio (Done in Diglett's Cave) Obtain a Bonsly, which requires catching a Sudowoodo (done on the respawned one, because catching with Poke Balls would be awful. I also get a female one to avoid catching a Ditto), and obtaining the Rock Incense (In Diglett's Cave, required Rock Climb so has to be after Brock), and hatching an Egg (given how late you obtain the Egg - you want a Pokemon that speeds up Egg Hatching. Because of this, I also obtain the Slugma Egg in Violet City at the start of the game to do just that) Catch a Pineco, and evolve to Forretress (Done on Route 27, just before Victory Road) Catch a Pikachu (~50% in Viridian Forest using Static Ability) Catch a Haunter (Done on Route 8, right at the end of the run, because it required Night Time, and it only ticks over to night right after I trade Bonsly for Rhyhorn) Also, since I have to catch Zapdos, I don't have a Master Ball to use for Red. As such, getting past Pikachu requires a different strategy, either using Shuckie Encore strats, or catching a Quagsire (I'm doing the former, other runs so far have done the latter) - Q: What are you playing on, it is emulator? A: No, I'm playing on a 3DS with a capture board installed allowing me to record game footage. Usually I use a DS, but because there is not resetting here, a 3DS works the same for run, and has the circle pad, which is useful for catching Magikarp. Q: Why do you choose Cyndaquil? A: Because the Cyndaquil evolution family is the best for start of the speedrun. Q: Why do you play as the girl? A: The counterpart does the catching tutorial, and the male does it faster, so it’s faster to choose the female for yourself. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI1-PJ7Sy1w Q: Why do you name yourself 'I' and Cyndaquil and Gyarados 'J'? A: Because it's faster to name them one character for text purposes, and the letter 'I' gives a nice spin as if the game was self-narrating. I use 'J' otherwise because it's a character really close to the "OK" button, so it's the easiest to select quickly.
